In recent months, house music has taken over the world. This genre created by DJs in Chicago has become a huge part of music played in concerts, clubs, parties, and more. If you haven’t listened to house music yet, this is your sign to give it a try.

Many people have discovered this rising genre during the summer, due to its upbeat sounds that many people associate with happiness. According to Learning Music, House music has a typical tempo of 115 – 130 bpm, which has been proven to have a positive effect on our brains. The repetitive beats at this BPM range can lower cortisol (a stress hormone) by up to 20%, and make us feel happier.  The repetitive 4/4 rhythm often aligns with the natural rhythm of our bodies, making us relax naturally.

Sophomore Fallon Loos has been an avid house music listener for around a year. Loos loves listening to this genre of music, as she says, “House music is unique because of the beat drops, and it gets you hyped. I have a lot of energy, and house music matches that. It also brings people together socially. House gets everyone excited, and is great to bond over”. For new listeners, Loos recommended “finding songs you already like, and then finding a house remix for it.”

Why else should you listen to house music? Sophomore, Celina Duong, says, “House music makes me feel that it aligns with our daily routines. House music makes me feel more in tune with myself, and allows me to loosen up. It also has connected me with people, and it is fun to be able to connect over a catchy beat.” She recommends artists like John Summit, Fisher, Disclosure, Diplo, and more. Their music is all slightly different, and and exploring these various artists can help you find what you enjoy listening to.. Her favorite song is “Turn Back Time” by Diplo, which she says keeps her “energized and grounded.”

House music isn’t just repetitive beats over and over; it’s the fastest-growing music genre at the moment. It’s a great way to boost your mood, feel more in tune, and keep your energy high! There are even subgenres in house music, and there are many songs to enjoy.  House music isn’t only played in Ibiza or at parties, but it’s a culture. Artists like Disclosure and Fisher are actually coming to the Bay Area to perform, so this is your time to give house music a try!
