When we think of Christmas, the image of little pine trees sitting next to our fireplaces is ubiquitous in our minds. However, how many of us truly know the process behind how those scented trees get to us, ready for decoration?

The Piedmont Scout Tree Lot on Moraga Avenue is a staple of the community, a seasonal landmark that is set up and run by the Piedmont Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Senior Daniel Lou is an Eagle Scout with experience volunteering and setting up the site. “Every year, the Order of the Arrow sets up the treelot,” he shared. The Order of the Arrow is the national honor society within the Scouts, consisting of both youth and adult members. In late November, the group erects the metal framing that holds the trees and the tents you see, along with constructing the checkout booth and securing the necessary tools, like saws and the netting machine, for safe operation.

While the Order of the Arrow is the one to set up the lot, any scout is encouraged to volunteer once it is up and running. This unique setting offers young members a crucial opportunity for development. Recalling his first time volunteering, Lou remembers the event as both “nerve-racking because he interacted with so many adults, but also really fun to do with friends.” Volunteering at the tree lot also offers young scouts community service hours, required by schools and for advancement within scouting. It is a stress-free event where they are asked to man the cashiers’ booth, assist customers with selection, and assist with cutting and netting trees. Also, it is an opportunity to hone the professional skills of remaining focused in an environment with friends, interacting respectfully with strangers and customers, and engaging in basic marketing and sales.

Buying a Christmas tree from Piedmont treelot supports local Boy Scout troops. All purchases go toward the Piedmont council, the leadership body of all units within the council. These funds support their yearly activities, necessary equipment purchases, and outreach programs, directly benefiting the local troops.  It is a true community event that marks the start of the holiday season.
