As the school year comes to a close, we bid farewell to some of our beloved staff. These individuals have inspired and nurtured our students, and their absence will be felt by the entire school community. Both students and staff are filled with gratitude for all they have done for the School, as we celebrate the indelible mark they have left on the community.
Firstly, the renowned physics duo, teachers Owen von Kugelgen (vonK) and Chris Harper, are retiring together. Over the years, they have taught and inspired countless students with passion and enthusiasm. vonK has been with the School since 1987 and later interviewed Harper while holding the role of Department Chair. This encounter brought the celebrated pair together, with 2023 marking Harper’s 25th year with the School.
When asked what his favorite memories are, vonK said, “I remember when the yearbook was dedicated to me [and] when our AP physics program was honored by the College Board as being the best for schools our size.” Another highlight was leading the robotics team to victory, and outsmarting a team led by a UC Berkeley engineer. “This sounds weird”, he says, “But I’ve looked forward to coming to work every single day.” Harper said that one of his favorite moments was performing in West Side Story alongside students in the early 2000s.
Some exciting retirement plans for both teachers are in the works; Harper will travel to the Shetland Islands where his ancestors lived, and VonK will go to Norway to visit family. Hopefully, retirement will relax their potential energies and release pressure! Or perhaps they will continue their physicist lifestyle on a beach, studying wave motion while chilling in the sun.
Lastly, after 41 years of incredible work at the School, Mary Fahey will be leaving the School community. Fahey coached middle school volleyball and upper school softball for 30 years, as well as teaching Physical Education. She says, “I have vivid memories of the opening days on both the field and the gym.” Her post school plan includes moving to Truckee with her husband. Fahey also says that she will enjoy seeing her 7 grandchildren, all scattered around the state.
On behalf of the entire school community, we wish these lovely people all the best in their retirement and give our thanks for their years of service to our school. Thank you for your incredible work and service, we are all very grateful!
