The Youth Mental Health Crisis is gradually gaining speed as people all across America are dealing with mental health challenges behind closed doors. Shedding light on the Youth Mental Health Crisis is critical in this day and age, especially with the extremely high standards put on the current generation.
Mental health is defined as “our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act, and helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices,” as written by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Sometimes it seems as though only one person is dealing with these obstacles, but these issues impact the way a society functions as a whole.
A poll recently conducted in Oakland, California, on August 3, 2023, found that “nearly nine out of ten Gen Z youth say they are experiencing mental health challenges on a regular basis, according to a new nationwide Blue Shield of California/Harris Poll survey…The survey polled over 1,300 youth, aged 14-25.” With numbers like these, stressing the importance of reaching out, talking to a trusted adult whether it be a parent or a counselor, or just taking time for yourself is crucial to building a healthy community.
An anonymous member of the School community was asked about their experience with mental health issues, specifically about the Youth Mental Health Crisis, and proceeded to state, “I would say yes, I do struggle with mental health challenges…I have a lot of anxiety around school. Last year, I struggled with disordered eating, especially for sports, and it was super weird…but I try to combat these challenges by just knowing my body…making sure to eat lunch at school every day and drink enough water. And eating breakfast has been a big one.”
Clearly, these challenges and experiences with mental health challenges show how real and close they are in this world. They continued by saying, “Mental health is important in this generation because I think we’re a pretty honest generation…and part of mental health is being in touch with yourself, your body, and I think that’s why understanding helps.”
Being aware of the people around you during these times by checking in on loved ones or asking how someone’s morning has been going can make a huge impact on their day. Dealing with mental health disorders can be draining, but pushing back against them can be even harder. To help, think of some ways in which the School as a whole can help fight the growing Youth Mental Health Crisis as even a small gesture can make the biggest difference.
