November 1st marks the celebration of World Vegan Day. In addition to honoring the vegan lifestyle, on World Vegan Day people also reflect on the pros and cons of adopting a plant-based diet.
Veganism, a dietary and ethical choice that avoids all animal products, has been gaining popularity in recent years. One of its most compelling arguments is its positive impact on animals and the environment. Veganism reduces the demand for animal agriculture, which is often associated with practices that harm animals and contribute to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water pollution. Senior Simone Gilbert, who lives a mostly vegan lifestyle, claims that “the majority of animal products come from places where animals are tortured, and [she] can’t support that.”
Many studies also suggest that a well-balanced vegan diet can be rich in essential nutrients, lower in saturated fats, and linked to a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease. This diet can also aid in weight management and boost overall health.
However, a vegan diet requires careful planning to ensure adequate intake of key nutrients that may not be obtained from plant-based sources alone.
Furthermore, one’s location and social circle can be another challenge. Finding suitable options at restaurants or cultural events may be difficult, as many cultures are based on consuming animal products, and vegan products tend to be more expensive. Social pressure and criticism is also a factor that can make being vegan challenging. For instance, Gilbert states that “people at school always hate on [her] vegan choices, and that can be frustrating.”
Ultimately, veganism offers numerous advantages, from ethical and environmental benefits to potential health improvements. However, it is not without its challenges, including nutritional considerations, social obstacles, and accessibility issues. Deciding to go vegan is a personal choice, and the pros and cons should be carefully weighed to determine if it aligns with one’s values and lifestyle.
