The Expos team is excited to present the future of our publication: we have radically changed the look and feel of our website, and you are reading this story on it right now!
The newspaper has long sought to freshen its web presence, but this change was finally executed with the hard work of three seniors from the computer science program, Arun Parwani, Justin Wong, and Sean Cavalieri.
Parwani, Wong, and Cavalieri have four years of computer science under their belts. While the project was not out of their usual area of development, this is the first website they have produced. On the Expos side of things, Ben Carroll, Brandon Byrd, Chris Ajose-Nixon, Cole Reynolds, Hayden Thompson, and Hollis Williams worked with the ComSci team to bring this project to life.
While visitors to the site can still expect the same articles, graphics and videos, the user interface has been remodeled from the ground up. Cavalieri said, “We created a modern-styled interface modeled after The Atlantic, The New York Times, and parts of various other online news sites.”
Readers may have been previously discouraged by the speed of the old website. The ComSci team tackled this problem by choosing to leave the old host servers, and host the Hawkseye on WordPress. This redesign has drastically improved the performance, and allows more simultaneous connections.
Next to articles, visitors to the site can access the newspaper’s library of student made videos and podcasts. Additionally, the CompSci team has installed an updating scoreboard, which can be used to track recent HRS games and game scores. Staff can update and display scores right as they come in.
Cavalieri told me, “We designed the website in a way that makes it much more customizable. Future years would also be able to easily add new features. This allows the website to stay up-to-date over the years rather than requiring another complete redesign when Expos’s needs may change in the next decade.”
Please feel free to further explore our website. Visitors can access over 150 articles, podcasts, videos, graphics, and school updates. Whether you seek to gain a better grasp on what’s happening in the world, challenge your conceptions, or catch our next large project, there is something for you on the Hawkseye. We are excited to see you there.
