For many student-athletes, the dream of playing at the collegiate level is years in the making. This is filled with long practices, early mornings, and a deep love for their sport. At the School, three seniors have turned that dream into a reality. Ezra Goldfarb, Dylan Donovan, and Sloan Harrison have officially committed to continuing their athletic and academic careers at UC Berkeley, Tufts University, and Rider University. The recruiting process is different for everyone, but nonetheless rewarding as ever.
Goldfarb committed to UC Berkeley for baseball at the end of June and said he had only been talking to the coaches for “only 2–3 weeks”, which is a short amount of time in comparison to most athletes. Goldfarb also states that committing has made senior year different for him, saying “all my friends are going through the process differently than me” and that his process is “much calmer and more relaxed than everyone else”. Despite the calmness now, the committing process is stressful and requires lots of work. Goldfarb speaks to this when saying he was constantly emailing coaches and attending college camps when he could.
Donovan committed to Tufts University for tennis in early August after talking to their coaches for around 9 months. Donovan reached out to around 20 total schools, saying, “I knew out of some of them I’d have a place to go, but I didn’t think I’d be going to Tufts”. Visiting schools and keeping in touch with coaches is a necessary step to take when trying to commit as an athlete, and is one of the things Donovan did well. He went on 10 official visits and kept in touch by emailing and calling several coaches in order to increase his chances of committing somewhere. After an athlete commits, it’s a common belief among peers that they can slack off and not work hard in school, but this isn’t always the case. Donovan says, “it’s not that simple, my parents also want me to get really good grades, and I also hold myself to the standard of getting mostly A’s”.
Harrison’s process looked a little different, as she committed to Rider University for lacrosse in her junior year. Harrison chose to commit to Rider for various reasons, despite getting offers from other schools. She loves where the school is located, in her hometown of New Jersey, and likes the coaching staff as well. All there is to say is “Go broncos”!
All 3 of these athletes have put extreme amounts of effort into trying to commit somewhere as an athlete, and they are here to show you that with dedication and hard work, it can be done. While the sports and schools differ, these 3 students will represent the School in all the great things they will accomplish in the future.
