In November, the School’s students will be putting on the fall play, called A Flea in Her Ear by Georges Feydeau.
The play is an old French comedy, and students who have auditioned for their roles are performing it, alongside the theatre tech crew setting it up. There will be four performances from November 12th-14th, and everyone is encouraged to come see it.
Andy Spear, the drama teacher, is partly in charge of casting the actors and actresses and is helping to put the play together and perfecting it. Spear describes the play by saying, “It is a play of misunderstandings, which centrally revolves around a wife who thinks her husband is cheating on her and decides to try to catch him. However, in trying to catch him, she complicates the lives of many of the other people around her because she does it in a secretive way, which perpetuates all the miscommunications that are going on.”
Spear chose this play for a couple of reasons, saying that one was “because we didn’t do a comedy last year,” stating that he likes a good variety in the plays they put on. He also mentioned that “With our group, I think a comedy will be a good challenge.”
Valentina Heredia, a senior at the School, plays Raymonde Chandebise, the lead female role who thinks her husband, Victor Immanuel-Chandebise, is having an affair. Heredia has been in the fall play all four years of high school. She’s loving the play and rehearsals, saying that it’s nice to have a play “where the plot is very grounded, and it’s really fun.” Heredia states, “It’s a good story for the medium of acting, [and] it’s just a very dynamic story where there’s a lot happening.”
Both Spear and Heredia have lots of insight on how the rehearsals are going, and they both understand the process of putting the play together very well, with Spear saying that comedy is about “trying to figure out where all the opportunities are to make it as much fun as you can without it getting out of control.”
The fall play is coming along very well. Spear says, “I hope we can surprise people. I don’t want to give too much away, but we’re finding new, funny things to add, kind of all the time.” The crew is extremely devoted to the production, and it’s working towards making the play as funny and interesting as possible. Overall, as Heredia says, “It’s just a fun time. It’s really not serious at all. Yeah, go see the play! It’s great.” With rehearsals underway and the whole drama department putting in effort, the play will be another entertaining show to watch yet again.
