Keeping Spirit Alive Amidst a Pandemic

With Covid-19 regulations and small cohorts, The School’s Spirit Captains are brainstorming creative ways to keep spirit alive among students. 

During a typical year, The School hosts various events, such as Homecoming, the All School Fair, and the Winter Ball. Unfortunately, the pandemic has sent all spirit plans into a spiral, as The School cannot host indoor or outdoor functions across grades. The Upper School’s Spirit Captains, Abby Evans ‘22, Ona Ortiz-Gudeman ‘22, and Phoebe Florance ‘22, have been creating various ways to make up for missed school-wide spirit events. 

Senior and Spirit Captain, Phoebe Florance explained that The School cannot host more than one grade at a time for indoor functions, and outdoor functions are not possible with the neighbors’ noise regulations. Additionally, The School is unable to host the All School Fair due to the lower school students being unvaccinated.   

To substitute for the missing events, Florance says the Spirit Captains are trying to come up with ways to plan “smaller cohort or single grade dances.” Florance adds that the Spirit Team is trying to host smaller events like dodgeball tournaments, open mics on the patio, and other forums that will bring the grades closer together.  

Ortiz-Gudeman, fellow Spirit Captain and Senior, explains that the spirit events being planned emphasize participation because “it is more important than ever to have a vibrant school experience, especially after COVID. So, we are trying to come up with competitions and events that encourage participation and collaboration from all students.”  

Ultimately, The School’s Spirit Captains and Spirit Squad are working diligently to come up with innovative ideas that bring grades together, while keeping school fun within the Covid regulations and boundaries.
