Get ready for an amazing showcase of talent as the School gears up for the highly anticipated spring musical! This year’s production, Mean Girls, opens on Thursday, March 21. The show will continue for two weekends and includes two different casts. The number of female-identifying students who wanted to audition inspired the decision to bring Mean Girls on stage, along with the amount of choreographed dance scenes. Andy Spear, drama teacher and musical director at the School, said, “As we look at shows, we also want to take advantage of the other assets that we have, and we happen to have a great dance teacher, so figuring out a way to make sure that there’s enough opportunity to use movement and dance in the show is really important.” Dance teacher Katie Kruger is leading the cast through the musical’s dance scenes. In the original Mean Girls movie, a few scenes are offensive and not up to date. Therefore, some changes will be made to the musical to update it from the original film. “Part of the comedy in Mean Girls is actually meant to be kind of edgy and to be maybe a little inappropriate, but we don’t hesitate to change something when we feel it is offensive,” said Spear. Two years ago, the School produced the Legally Blonde musical which had a much larger turnout than expected. As a result, the School decided to have a yearly musical, instead of every other year. After the pandemic, people started having a great time during the musicals, and enough people were auditioning to have it yearly. As the opening performance of Mean Girls is just around the corner, supporting the show and bringing family and friends is strongly encouraged!
