High school is a time when people grow, mature, and spend their last years as a teenager creating unforgettable memories before becoming an adult. Many high schoolers also begin dating, which is inevitably filled with challenges and uncertainties.

Drawing upon my own dating experience, having been in a relationship for a year, I will touch upon dating tips that can (hopefully) help build a meaningful and fulfilling relationship.

It can be difficult to spend time developing a relationship with your partner when you are juggling school work, friends, and extracurriculars. However, when done correctly, it is very rewarding and fulfilling.

The most important key to dating is good communication. Whenever there is a conflict or issue, genuinely listening to your partner is vital to maintain a healthy relationship with your partner. Communicating your specific boundaries, feelings, or any other thoughts forms the foundation for a successful relationship and true connection.

Senior Topher Sah says, “Communication is probably the most important thing. Just be present for your partner and be mindful that they may be going through things that you might not understand, but it is important to support them regardless.”

It’s undeniable that most relationships consume a lot of time. Because of this, prioritizing your physical and mental health, especially during your junior and senior years, is essential to maintaining good grades and mental and physical health. Knowing and articulating your own boundaries (and that of your partners) is crucial.

Senior Ainsley High says, “My boyfriend and I have very busy and often conflicting schedules, but carving out dedicated time to eat lunch together, workout together, or study together has made it much easier to spend time with him throughout high school.” It is important to ensure that you still have the energy and willpower to do many other activities outside of your relationship. Finding a relationship with someone should add value to your life, not take away from it.

In other words, having good communication about each other’s schedule and making a conscious effort to engage in activities that are mutually beneficial is imperative.

Furthermore, it often helps to have a solid friendship with the person before dating them. This initial friendship can allow the partners to safely explore each other’s values, preferred activities, and character traits in a platonic way before romantic interests come into play. Knowing this information before dating someone can establish a more trusting and confident connection.
