After the best Men’s Basketball season in School history in the 2022-23 season with a record of 29-5, a BCL East League Championship, and runner-up of the NCS Championship, Athletic Director Brendan Blakely has decided to hire School alum Ryan Diew as Head Coach of the Varsity team for the 2023-24 season.
Diew graduated from the School in 2013 having played Varsity Basketball, eventually he went on to play Division One basketball at Colgate University, giving him a unique perspective that most coaches cannot offer. As an alum, Diew can also relate to players off the court.
Senior Point Guard Malcolm Weekes believes Diew “brings that kind of winning mentality that we need and that urgency to win and to make us better.”
Diew’s presence around the team has the players locked in for the upcoming season with the game schedule being the toughest it has ever been. The team entered into powerhouse tournaments such as the Chris Vontoure Classic hosted by De La Salle High School and is scheduled to play the reigning Division 3 CIF State Champions at Oakland High School.
The team is using practice time more efficiently in preparation for these big games and showcases. Not only is Coach Diew well prepared when it comes to practice and game plans to set the team up for the greatest amount of success possible, but he is also dedicating time to team bonding and camaraderie. Players like Weekes love his fun and approachable nature off the court as well.
“The big goal is to of course get one of those state championship banners,” Weekes says. It has certainly been a goal within close reach of the team the past few years, as they were just one game away from making it to the State Championship game in the Sacramento Kings Arena in 2022, and just last season falling short in the NorCal Regional Quarterfinal to Burlingame High School. With the addition of Coach Diew, the team is confident their new fearless leader can finally lead them to the State Championship game they have been hoping for. Diew reiterated: “Once I go hard at something, I’m all in until I get it done.”
