Boom or Bust: Warriors Offseason Predictions

After a forgettable, league-worst 15-50 finish for the Golden State Warriors, the franchise enters its most important offseason since they signed Kevin Durant in 2016. Armed with the number two overall pick in this year’s draft, two first rounders in next year’s (including the Timberwolves potential lottery pick), and a $17.2 million trade exception, the Warriors have an abundance of possibilities for improving their roster, including potentially trading for a superstar. 

Throughout his tenure as the Warriors General-Manager, Bob Myers has always had a card up his sleeve; a card that has repeatedly included luring superstars to the Bay. The Warriors’ past acquisitions of elite talents like Kevin Durant, DeMarcus Cousins, D’Angelo Russell, and Andre Igoudala have prompted speculation that the organization could potentially trade for another superstar this offseason. The most publicized options are Joel Embiid, Bradley Beal, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. While the thought of having any of these electrifying talents in a Warriors jersey is enticing, trading for one is highly impractical and unlikely. Beal is a wing player, and the Warriors have made it clear Klay Thompson is their focus at the position. In regards to Embiid and Giannis, it’s unlikely either will request a trade, and even if they do, there are other teams that could offer far more appealing packages than the Warriors. It’s no secret Warriors fans have long salivated at pursuing Giannis, but as former SI Kids writer and die-hard Dubs fan Gus Bailey, pointed out: “Giannis has publicly said he wants to be in Milwaukee, and his ball dominant playing style isn’t an ideal fit in the Warriors offense.” 

Although the Warriors probably won’t trade for a star, it’s almost certain they will use their mid-level exception (a clause allowing them to trade for someone with a contract up to $17.2 Million without having to pay any luxury tax) to acquire a solid role player. A few potential MLE trade candidates are Jrue Holiday, Marc Gasol, Marcus Smart, and Aaron Gordon. The best option available is Raptors Center, Marc Gasol. His “improved shooting ability,” according to Bailey, shot-blocking on defense, and veteran leadership make him a great fit within the Warriors system. Additionally, Bob Myers and company have been actively looking for upcoming free agents to sign for the minimum contract. One player they’ll look at is Kris Dunn, a former lottery pick whose career as a Chicago Bull hasn’t turned out as planned. While Dunn’s offensive game has struggled in his early years, “his elite perimeter defense makes him an intriguing option to backup Steph Curry,” said Bailey. 

Lastly, the Warriors have a decision to make with who they want to select at #2 overall. The front office shouldn’t overthink it because the answer should be obvious if he’s available: Memphis big man, James Wiseman. Wiseman could give an immediate boost on defense and has long term offensive potential. He could be the missing piece to an already lethal starting lineup.
